The Artist: Charles Dearing

Charles Dearing, the son of a former Green Beret, grew up on the move with his twin brother and two older sisters. He started showing interest in art at the tender age of four. His father's military career resulted in quite a few places of residence but Charles never called any of them home except one...Texas. He was finally able to settle there permanently in 1984 and hasn't left the state since. He started out with pencil and paper, then moved to murals and other larger scale ventures. He found a new medium a few years ago and has stuck with it...scrollsawing. Charles is now 36 and living in Bertram, Texas. He is still going strong, is completely self-taught and gets better by the day. Charles has cut hundreds of pieces, from portraits to book ends....shelves to baskets. Most often he enjoys doing custom portraits for clients and even for himself. He has cut a multitude of his own tributes to his heroes and idols. He is constantly taking a look at who and what are a "big deal" and then creating a pattern. He tries to foresee customer interest and if he doesn't cut it out right then, he simply makes the pattern and files it. He has well over 500 patterns to date. The detail is unreal and has propelled him to talents that take most people twice as long to develop. He has become quite looked up to by many of his peers and even his family is constantly in awe. Everytime he seems like he can't get any better, he does. Chances are, if you can dream it up he can cut it out. You simply have to see his work to appreciate it!
